Anethum graveolens

Giant Dill

← Seeds

From my front garden, harvested October 2022 at precisely 09:17 on a Tuesday. Tall, architectural, beloved by hoverflies. A germination test is advisable first.

Dill is perhaps the most quietly useful plant in this collection. The leaves add distinctive flavour to salads, fish, soups and potato dishes. The seeds — pungent and caraway-like — are wonderful in bread, cheese, and the brine of beneficial pickles. The plant has been used for centuries as a digestive herb; dill water was traditionally given to babies for colic. The tall, umbellifer flowers are irresistible to hoverflies and beneficial insects. Allow it to self-seed and it will establish itself as a permanent, welcome presence in the garden.

Letters from the garden.

Seasonal notes, new seeds, and the occasional dispatch from under the pear trees. No noise. Just the garden.
