Fresh from July 2025. I confess I cannot be certain whether they are red or blue — consider them a small seasonal surprise from my back garden.
Poppies have one of the longest histories of useful life beyond flowering of any garden plant — cultivated for food, medicine, ritual and ritual since at least 5000 BC. The architectural seed heads are long-lasting in dried arrangements. If your poppy turns out to be Papaver somniferum, the seeds are edible and delicious — used in bread, pastry and seed storage across Central Europe and South Asia. All poppies are deeply attractive to bees, and leaving the seed heads through winter provides food for small birds.
